“People like selling their items here because they want to give their clothes a second lease of life to someone else who will love it. Shopping here is like raiding your best friend’s wardrobe! Plus, people love to come in just for a chat.”

Want the lowdown on a spot that’s all about eco-conscious coolness?

Gathering Threads is way more than your grandma’s thrift shop – it’s a whole vibe! Dianne Macdonald, the brains and heart behind Gathering Threads, is turning preloved fashion into the new black.

She started this go-to for preloved goodness after years spent as an educator with a passion for sustainability.

“I grew up in the country where we lived off the land and learnt to make and mend.  This led me to teaching kids about gardening, harvesting, and cooking. Over time, I became aware of how wasteful the fashion industry can be.

“In 2022 I went camping on Kangaroo Island and discovered a pre-loved clothing store with a similar model to Gathering Threads. That’s when I started brewing the idea for me to start something similar in my own community.”

A mere eight weeks later, Dianne had a business name and had found the perfect location for a shop along Barkly Street, West Footscray. She spent a few weeks ripping up carpet and painting walls, before swinging the doors open in June 2022.

Gathering Threads started out in one room with ten racks, but is now a cosy three-room setup that changes its style daily.

“We have twenty-eight racks that people can rent to sell their clothing and accessories. Although we do get menswear and childrenswear, the majority of the stock is womenswear, as our clientele is mainly women. They come to spoil themselves rather than necessarily buying for their partners or kids.”

Now, Gathering Threads isn’t about labels. Nope, Dianne’s all about keeping stuff out of the landfill. Sellers are welcome to sell whatever’s in their decluttered wardrobe as long as it’s in good condition and of a saleable quality.

“People like selling their items here because they want to give their clothes a second lease of life to someone else who will love it. Shopping here is like raiding your best friend’s wardrobe! Plus people love to come in just for a chat.”

Next plans for Gathering Threads include style nights where you can sip and shop and get style tips from the pros, as well as regular swap meets for kids to sell and swap their toys and books on Gathering Threads’ front lawn.

“I want to teach the next generation about sustainability, so that recycling is part of everyday life – as much of a habit as brushing your teeth. Little changes can make big changes!” she says.

So, fashion fiends, lock in your next shopping spree. If you haven’t hit up Gathering Threads yet, you’re missing out. The shop is like a fashion fiesta for sustainable fashion, and you’re invited.
