Hop Nation Brewing Co

What Are Your Favourite Things About the West?

Vibrant food, rooftop views, and endless good times—this three-storey bar brings Tex-Mex eats, arcade games, and over 100 taps of beer and cocktails together for the ultimate night out.

New to the West and not sure where to start? One of the best ways to get a feel for this side of Melbourne is through the people who call it home. Locals know the best walks, eats, and hangouts, and their stories paint the real picture of life here.

Natalie, a proud resident from postcode 3011, even convinced her partner to move to the West and she might just convince you too.

“I love the diversity, the grittiness of Footscray CBD, the beauty of the Maribyrnong River walking track. Saturdays are for walking to Barkly Street for a banh mi, then eating it with a beer at Mr West while watching the people in Nicholson Street Mall get up to mischief. On Fridays, we head to Hop Nation for beers—and even ended up being interviewed for the news on Star Wars Day! We love our apartment overlooking the river and the lights of the docks.” – Natalie, local resident

The West is multicultural, vibrant, and always surprising. Wander its streets and you’ll find everything from steaming bowls of pho to juicy souvlaki, a true reflection of its diverse community. And beyond the food, there’s plenty to see, do, and explore.

Things to Do While You’re Exploring the West

Walk along the Maribyrnong River

If you love nature or just need to stretch your legs after a long day, the Maribyrnong River Trail is the perfect escape. This point-to-point trail winds through Melbourne’s north-western suburbs and is popular with runners, walkers, and cyclists. Keep an eye out for local birdlife while you soak in the views.

Barkly Street

What’s on Barkly Street? Pretty much everything. Cafes, restaurants, and parks line this lively stretch. It’s where locals grab a banh mi on the go, then wander down to enjoy a beer at Mr West.

Nicholson Street Mall

Located in the heart of Footscray, Nicholson Street Mall is more than just a shopping strip, it’s the social hub of the community. Pedestrianised back in the 1970s, it was one of the first of its kind in Australia. Today, it’s home to markets, food stalls. As Natalie puts it, the perfect place to “watch the people in Nicholson Street Mall get up to mischief.”

Hop Nation

For beer lovers, this Footscray brewery is a must. With rotating taps, live music, and even the occasional quirky moment (like Natalie being interviewed on Star Wars Day!), it’s one of the friendliest places to unwind and feel like a true local.

Whether it is riverside walks, banh mi on Barkly Street, or beers at Hop Nation, the West has a way of making everyday moments feel special. For Natalie, it is not just a place to live; it is a community full of character, flavour, and stories waiting to be shared.

If you are new to the West, take a page out of the locals’ book. Wander the streets, try the food, and soak in the atmosphere. You might just find yourself falling in love with it too.
